Ageing Better comes to Hackney
Posted: 08 Apr 2016
The project provides volunteer travel buddies for older people who are socially isolated or at risk of social isolation.
The idea is to help older people in Hackney to get out and about on public transport. Following training and a 6-8 week period of support from a buddy, their confidence should increase. This in turn will mean that they can access leisure activities and community life – improving their quality of life. The project runs for two years, aiming to help a minimum of 20 people a year regain their independence and a further 116 people to benefit from taking part.
Co-ordinating the project at our Community Transport Unit will be Sabana Siddique, who has been appointed as our Ageing Better Volunteer Outreach and Referral Officer. As well as co-ordinating the project, Sabana will be recruiting and training the volunteers who act as travel buddies for the service users.
Sabana joined HCT Group in 2014 as a Transport Co-ordination Centre operative, before moving onto administrative support. Before her time at HCT Group, she was a retail manager at ASDA, looking after a team of 40 staff.
