Training the socially isolated to become independent
Hackney Community Transport are very excited to introduce our fantastic new service, Ageing Better, ‘Inspire 50plus’.
Hackney residents aged 50plus who are or are at risk of social isolation, will have the support of a travel companion who will take them through 6-8 week training on accessing and gaining confidence to get out and about on public transport. It will cover all aspects of travel from how to apply for an oyster card, fares, timetables, to actually accompanying them on their journeys. The Travel Companion will work with the service user to build their confidence and help them to find activities they would like to get involved in. This will then enable the service user to travel independently and help them to continue to get involved in the community, or interact with family and friends.
We understand that getting onto public transport can be intimidating for various reasons, but we will go at their pace. It’s their journey!
We are also looking for Volunteer Travel Companions to provide peer support to the service users and inspire them along their training. Without these key volunteers, the service cannot reach all those that need this service. If that is you, or anyone you know, we would love for you to get in touch.
We will provide full training which will cover aspects such as First Aid, travel training, safe guarding, travel routes and boundaries, to ensure each volunteer is equipped and confident to deliver the training.
